The 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider Veloce is a celebrated example of open-top Italian motoring. Designed by the world-renowned coachbuilder Pininfarina, the Giulietta Spider Veloce featured elegant, clean lines that were representative of the late 1950s and early 1960s aesthetic. The Veloce designation indicated a higher performance specification than the standard model, making it a highly desirable variant within the Giulietta product line.
Central to its appeal is the performance-tuned 1.3 L twin-cam inline-four engine. This engine, known for its high-revving nature, was equipped with the dual Weber carburetors necessary to achieve the Veloce specification. Mated to a four-speed manual transmission, this setup provided the responsive and engaging driving experience for which Alfa Romeo became known.
The Giulietta Spider Veloce is today appreciated for its classic design and driving enjoyment. Its design influence and mechanical configuration are a significant part of Alfa Romeo's legacy, with many examples validated by documents such as the Alfa Romeo Classiche Certificato Di Origine which confirms their build history. The car remains a favorite among enthusiasts who value its particular blend of styling and mechanics.
The vehicle offered, a highly-maintained example of a 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider Veloce, was originally manufactured in October 1960 and delivered new to the prominent Hoffman Motor Car Co. in New York City. The car has undergone extensive and consistent refurbishment, most notably a 16-year project completed in 2013, with substantial mechanical service performed in recent years.
Power is derived from a 1.3 L twin-cam inline-four engine paired with a four-speed manual transmission, sending power to the rear wheels. The engine block stamping 01218 matches the number listed on the Alfa Romeo Certificato Di Origine. The drivetrain has benefited from recent significant work. A complete engine rebuild was performed in 2020 by Ferrari of Atlanta, which included a valve job, piston machining, and replacement of the exhaust valves, piston rings, front crankshaft seal, engine mounts, hoses, gaskets, and seals. Furthermore, the starter, generator, heater box, and both Weber carburetors were rebuilt, and the exhaust manifolds were replaced (the removed manifolds are included). The four-speed manual transmission was also rebuilt by Ferrari of Atlanta in 2020. Earlier work included rebuilding the differential and replacing the clutch in 2013, and replacing the exhaust system in 2015. The suspension setup includes Koni dampers, and the alignment was adjusted in February 2021.
The Pininfarina-designed bodywork was refinished in the factory white in 1997. Exterior features include a refurbished black soft top, a replica boot cover, a chrome front grille, bumpers, and trim, along with Pininfarina fender badges. The windshield, headlights, taillight lenses, and wiper arms have been replaced. The vehicle rides on Fergat wheels fitted with reproduction hubcaps and Michelin tires.
The cabin features a refreshed interior finished in black vinyl seats with red piping, matching door panels, and red carpets over body-color sheet metal. The interior has seen numerous updates: the seat cushions were replaced in 1998 and the seatbacks recovered in 2020; the carpets were replaced in 2015; and the shift knob and floor mats were installed in 2018. A two-spoke steering wheel frames the primary instrumentation, which includes an 8k-rpm tachometer and a 140 mph speedometer. Auxiliary gauges monitor oil temperature, water temperature, fuel level, and oil pressure. The gauges were reconditioned with replaced inserts and chrome trim rings. The five-digit odometer shows 74k miles; however, the total mileage is unknown, and a blemish is noted on the tachometer. Minor cosmetic flaws are noted, including peeling material on the floors behind the seats and a tear in the rubber trunk mat. A fire extinguisher is mounted in the trunk.
Accompanying the vehicle are a tool roll, copies of dealer flyers, service records, refurbishment photos, manufacturer's literature, an Alfa Romeo Classiche Certificato Di Origine, and various removed parts.
