Volvo B18 Engine fully rebuilt. 4-Year Rotisserie Restoration Performed.
The Volvo P1800 was Volvo's elegant entry into the sports coupé market, debuting in the early 1960s with a sleek body designed by Pelle Petterson. The "S" designation of the 1965 model marks the crucial shift in production to Volvo's own facility in Sweden, which standardized and improved build quality. The P1800 achieved immediate international celebrity status as the car driven by Simon Templar in the popular 1960s television series The Saint, instantly transforming the coupé into a global icon of sophisticated, reliable performance and timeless design.
This specific 1965 P1800S is a highly desirable Swedish-built model. Its history as a cherished California-delivery vehicle from new provides excellent provenance and a traceable lineage through only five long-term owners. The comprehensive four-year, nut-and-bolt rotisserie restoration ensured the meticulous preservation of its factory specifications, including the Pearl White finish. The P1800 remains revered for its style and is famously associated with one of the greatest mileage records in history, symbolizing the legendary durability inherent in every example.
In 1988, the cars 3rd owner had the B18 engine fully rebuilt. The cars 4th owner decided to bring the car back to showroom condition. Show Car Restoration of Van Nuys, California, was entrusted with the vehicle and given the task of bringing it back to its as-delivered condition. In 1995, a 4-year rotisserie restoration was commenced. This P1800S is powered by a 1,782cc OHV 4-Cylinder B18 engine (#6188). Induction is managed by twin SU Carburetors, which contributed to the factory-rated output of 108 brake horsepower at 5,800 rpm. The power is delivered through a 4-Speed Manual Transmission equipped with a desirable electric overdrive unit, allowing for more versatile cruising speeds.
The braking system is the factory-correct setup, featuring disc brakes at the front axle and drum brakes at the rear. This system was recently enhanced with the installation of an original Girling brake booster for improved stopping performance. The chassis benefits from a "more sporting oriented" suspension setup that includes modern performance components: Bilstein shock absorbers, IPD anti-roll (sway) bars, and 30mm lowering springs. This combination was chosen to optimize handling and provide the feel of a lightweight sports car.
The electrical infrastructure was fully updated during the restoration, including the installation of a new wiring harness. Interior technical components include original blue-faced gauges, an original radio delete plate, and Volvo accessory Recaro chrome-plated seat recliners with headrests, providing a fully adjustable seating position.
