The history of the Ferrari 512 BBi (Berlinetta Boxer iniezione) is a straightforward account of how Ferrari adapted its mid-engine flagship to changing global regulations while refining its mechanical package. The model lineage began in 1971 with the 365 GT4 BB. This car was significant as Ferrari's first road vehicle to feature a mid-mounted flat-12 engine, a configuration borrowed directly from the company's racing programs. This placement, with the engine behind the driver, established the layout that would define Ferrari supercars for decades.
The Berlinetta Boxer (BB) line was updated in 1976 with the introduction of the 512 BB. The "512" designation referenced its 5.0 liter displacement and 12 cylinders. It proved to be a successful evolution, but as the decade ended, increasingly strict emissions standards—particularly in the key North American market—posed a challenge for its carbureted setup.
Ferrari's solution arrived in 1981 with the ultimate version of the BB: the 512 BBi. The 5.0 liter flat-12 engine was retained, but the six Weber carburetors were replaced by a modern Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system. This engineering change was primarily implemented for efficiency and compliance, rather than a pursuit of higher peak power. The fuel injection improved cold starting, enhanced low-speed drivability, and allowed the car to meet worldwide emissions standards. The "i" (for iniezione or injection) was added to the name to signify this crucial mechanical upgrade.
Built from 1981 to 1984, the 512 BBi represents the final and most refined iteration of the Boxer platform. It served as the transition model from Ferrari's raw, carbureted supercars to the more technologically advanced machines that followed. With only 1,007 examples produced, the 512 BBi concluded the Berlinetta Boxer run and was succeeded by the Testarossa. It is appreciated today as the last iteration of Ferrari's pioneering flat-12 mid-engine series.
This 1983 Ferrari 512 BBi (Berlinetta Boxer iniezione) is a late-production example of Ferrari's definitive mid-engine flat-12 platform, presented with a distinct history and a recent, comprehensive mechanical overhaul. The vehicle currently shows 13,900 km (8,637 miles) on the odometer.
The 512 BBi is celebrated as the final and most refined iteration of the Berlinetta Boxer line, featuring Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection for improved drivability and emissions compliance over its carbureted predecessors. Its power comes from the legendary 5.0 liter flat-12 engine, making it a critical bridge between analog supercars and modern Ferrari performance.
Originally finished in a distinctive two-tone Red and Black livery, this example was briefly exported to the Netherlands before returning to the United States. Following its return, the owner commissioned Auto Sports Designs Inc. of Huntington Station, New York, for a significant cosmetic change in approximately 2013. At the owner's explicit request—stating "It has to be black"—the vehicle underwent a professional color change to its present glossy Black finish. Concurrently, the interior was tastefully updated with red Daytona-style seat inserts, offering a classic contrast to the black upholstery.
In the spring of 2025, the vehicle was delivered to Intrepid Motorcar Co. of Sparks, Nevada, for a no-expense-spared, engine-out service. This comprehensive work ensures the BBi is mechanically sorted and ready for immediate use, and included refinishing the exhaust system with high-temperature ceramic coatings; refinishing the intake manifolds and ducting, along with replacing all intake manifold gaskets and seals; a complete rebuild of the radiator; replacement of all necessary fuel, coolant, and AC hoses; AC compressor function testing and a complete AC system rebuild, resulting in a documented 36

F output at the dash vents; rebuilding the water pump and replacing the critical timing and drive belts; inspection and adjustment of the valves; and the installation of four new Michelin TRX metric tires.
This 512 BBi is offered with an outstanding mechanical file documenting its recent major service, representing a highly desirable, turn-key example of Ferrari's iconic flat-12 road car.
