The 302 Heritage Hero: A 1 of 500 Parnelli Jones Edition Saleen Mustang

The silhouette of the PJ Edition is instantly recognizable to any fan of the SCCA Trans-Am era. Drenched in Grabber Orange with the iconic black "hockey-stick" stripes, it features the most comprehensive styling overhaul of its generation. From the functional Shaker hood and competition-style hood pins to the blacked-out trunk and 1970-replica rear wing, every detail was chosen to evoke the spirit of Parnelli's championship-winning machine. It is one of the few Mustangs that successfully blends "retro" aesthetics with "modern" performance.

While most Mustangs of this year carried a 4.6-liter engine, the PJ Edition features a bored and stroked 5.0-liter (302 CID) V8 hand-built by Saleen. This high-compression, naturally aspirated heart produces 400 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. It wasn't just about the power; it was about how it was made. Featuring forged aluminum pistons, forged steel connecting rods, and performance camshafts, this engine was built to rev. Mated to a close-ratio 5-speed manual with a lightweight aluminum flywheel, it provides a mechanical, high-winding character that mimics the classic racing engines of the 70s.

Where the PJ Edition truly separates itself from the standard Mustang GT is in the chassis. This car features the Saleen Racecraft suspension, which includes a sophisticated Watt's Link rear suspension—a rare and expensive upgrade that keeps the solid rear axle perfectly centered under heavy cornering. Combined with 4-piston Saleen/Brembo front brakes and 19-inch Mini-Lite inspired wheels, this chassis was tuned to handle like a road-racer, offering a level of composure and "turn-in" that felt decades ahead of its contemporaries.

Step inside, and you are greeted by a cabin that balances 2000s tech with vintage racing cues. The seats are upholstered in a unique Black and Orange leather scheme that mirrors the exterior, while the dashboard features a serialized plaque identifying its production number. Most importantly, the center of the dashboard carries the hand-applied signatures of Parnelli Jones and Steve Saleen. With its 180-mph speedometer and center-mounted oil pressure and temperature gauges, the cockpit feels less like a production car and more like a purpose-built racing sanctuary.
